This Polk audio psw505 powered sub is my first acquisition of a significant stand alone subwoofer, before all I ever possessed was all-in a single type system at the center of the cost range. Knowing that this factor is blowing off all anticipation I'd. This is actually the first woofer I've had that does not sound like its will inflate or have been odd buzzing sounds, etc. very neat and tight. Music sounds awesome, movies are spectacular. I paired this sub with my Polk Audio RM75 speakers and I have to say I was very surprised at how loud this sub can get while still remaining very clear. The bass from this isn't at all sloppy even at the loudest volumes. I bought his sub on sale for $170 and for the price you can't beat it. When I received it the first thing i noticed was how big i was. I was kind of afraid it was going to be a small sub, but it is of good size and heavy enough. I have it paired up with Polk Monitor 60 speakers and they go well together. Unfortunately I haven't really been able to test the system at it's full capacity due to the fact that I haven't gotten a good receiver. But even with he old receiver it sounds good and will rattle windows and shake the floor. I don't usually review items I purchase on Amazon, but this product is an exception. We recently purchased a new home and I am in the process of installing 7.1 surround in the living room. I installed Polk Audio RC85i in-wall speakers for the front and front surround speakers. They sounded great, but my subwoofer just didn't fill the room. Since I was so pleased with the RC85i speakers I took a look at the Polk Audio subwoofer. The reviews were great and the price seemed reasonable so I ordered it from Amazon. As usual it arrived in a timely manner and was installed last night. The manual recommended starting with the volume at 50%. When we hit the first alien encounter in Cowboy's and Aliens, WOW! The last place I heard that much bass was in a movie theater. The bass was clear with no distortion and the room actually shook! Needless to say I had to turn it down a bit. This Polk subwoofer blew all of my expectations out of the water. As other reviews will say, this sub is loud and will definitely cover all the needs of a home theatre system. The volume control for the sub, which is found on the back, is very useful as it can sometimes be overpowering of the other sounds (in your music, movies, etc). This "overpowering" is not a problem, but it is hard to be respectful of my neighbors in my apartment building. Normal volumes are fine throughout the week, but I usually don't watch movies or listen to music more loudly until the weekend. It's easy to love this sub, and should provide anyone with the sound they need, and at the price it sells for on Amazon right now, you may not find a better deal. This subwoofer is very good with movies, but the clean natural bass really shines with music. More thump than rumble. From what I can tell by talking to Polk engineers as well as others, this is one of the better subwoofers that they have ever made considering price. I had no idea that I could get this much subwoofer at this price point. I was going to put the velodyne with the second system that I'm building in the office, but that bass wouldn't be up to the standard of the Polk. I'm buying a second PSW505. this Sub-woofer is amazing. It is big, but big is power. I have around a 2000 dollar surround sound system and prior to this sub i had a cheep one. I could tell right away that this sub made a 100 percent difference. i would recommend this to everyone. My Definitive Technology PF12 sub finally bit the dust after 15 yrs. This is the closest thing to it at a third of the cost. Working with a Yamaha 5.1 HTR-5150 receiver with filtering off all channels of so am using the PSW505 filter. Sound is clean and tight at all volume levels. I looked into the Polk CS20 and a few others, but for the price and specs of this sub it was no brainer. It's a well built sub and sounds amazing when watching action movies or playing video games. I'm no expert on Home Theater sound systems. I bought a Denon AVR-891 Receiver a couple weeks ago. My Surround speakers are from a previous Panasonic HTIB BT200 system that failed completely in less than 2 years. It had a Passive Subwoofer that sorta worked with the new Denon when hooked up along with the front speakers. However, I wanted an active subwoofer that would kick out some bass that slightly exceeded the Denon's output capability. After hooking this subwoofer up, my son wanted to re-watch Transformers 1. All I can say is the sound was awesome. Between the subwoofer and the AR surround speakers on the Denon's cinematic setting, the sound was better than anything the Panasonic system ever produced. We have a 15 by 21' room, and this system achieved everything I hoped, good theater sound with booming bass at a reasonable price.  polk audio psw505

Ive went without a sub for very seven years. Knowing that I wanted a pretty good model I browsed around and looked at the prices. Amazon had to the best price/e bar none. This is a very nice sub. I'm a musican & want my music to have a nice fat solid sounding bass drum tump @ bass guitar & this sub does it right. You can feel the bass hitting you in the chest. Its GREAT. Its not a boomy bass like you hear in cars.. that sucks & sounds like crap. This is one bad ass sub. Goes great with my RTI 10 tower speakers & rti 6 surrounds. This sub was a lot bigger than I had expected but once I connected it and got to hear the bass, I didn't care! My living room walls vibrated with this thing on and the volume turned up. This is replacing a JBL 12" that burned out the power supply circuit board. The JBL performed good until the board burned out, but it happened before it was one and a half years old. This subwoofer is perfect. I've yet to be able to turn it up past 75% because even at 75% the bass is so powerful not only does the whole house shake but my neighbors house and you can feel the bass outside. A great product, and with the exception of some creative wiring solutions I had to come up with to install it, a relatively easy to set up and start using product. Powerful and smooth with a very spacious sound that fills a room and locks in solidly with the panning and steering of digital movie soundtracks. Pulls up some of the lowest frequencies to be found on any recorded material with no discernible distortion. I purchased this since my energy subwoofer had a 8 inch speaker and was good down to 35 hz. My energy cf70 were good down to 37 hz so the subwoofer was no longer giving the awsome deep affect that it once was. Replaced it with this psw505 with a 12 inch woofer and it blended perfectly and sounded extremely nice on music and with movies. I would highly advise anyone needing a sub. and has room for it.
